I Br0ke My Arm and Asked My Husband to Help with Our 5-Month-Old Twins, but He Said, ‘Moms Don’t Get Sick Days’ – So I Taught Him a Lesson He’d Never Forget

PART 3

Over the next several weeks, Derek began showing up without waiting to be asked.

Twice a week, he left work on time.

He added the twins’ medical appointments to his own calendar.

He learned that Luke settled faster when pressed against his chest.

He discovered that Miles usually needed movement before he could fall asleep.

He still made mistakes.

But I stopped immediately stepping in to rescue him every time something went wrong.

He needed to learn.

And I needed to stop carrying everything simply because I could do it faster.

Three weeks later, my arm had healed enough that I decided to bring some of our belongings home.

Not everything.

Derek noticed immediately.

“You’re keeping clothes at your mom’s?”

“Yes.”

“Because you still don’t trust me?”

I thought about the question.

“Because I’m learning to trust myself. If everything falls apart again, I’m not going to wait until I’m physically broken before I do something about it.”

That night, Miles began crying from the nursery.

Out of habit, I started to stand.

But Derek was already on his feet.

“I’ve got him,” he said. “That’s his tired cry.”

Then he disappeared down the hallway.

A minute later, Miles became quiet.

I picked up the cup of tea beside me.

It was still warm.

For months, I had believed being a good mother meant carrying everything.

Then I broke my arm and learned something much more important.

A good mother doesn’t have to prove how much she can endure.

And a father shouldn’t have to be repeatedly asked to act like one.
