ON MY WEDDING DAY, MY MIL ORDERED ME TO PLAY THE SUBSERVIENT MAID FOR 30 MEN.

The first slap came before we had even cut the wedding cake. The second came after I looked directly at my groom and said, “I am not your mother’s servant.”

Thirty men were seated at long banquet tables beneath crystal chandeliers, most of them Daniel Mercer’s relatives and business associates. I was still wearing my wedding gown, my veil perfectly pinned in place, when my mother-in-law, Lorraine, put a silver tray into my hands.

“Now you prove you can be a proper Mercer wife,” she announced. “You pour the whiskey, clear every plate, and serve the men before you eat.”

For a moment, I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn’t.

The ballroom became so quiet that I could hear ice shifting inside the glasses.

I lowered the tray onto the table.

“No.”

Lorraine’s smile immediately stiffened.

“Excuse me?”

“I said no. I’m your son’s bride, not unpaid staff.”

A few of the men gave uncomfortable laughs.

Daniel walked toward me, his jaw tight.

“Just do it, Elena,” he whispered. “Don’t embarrass me.”

“You’re embarrassing yourself.”

His hand struck my face.

Gasps swept across the ballroom.

For one stunned second, I tasted blood from where my tooth had cut the inside of my cheek.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Apologize to my mother.”

I remained silent.

He slapped me again.

And suddenly, everything inside me became calm.

I struck him once across the face, hard enough to turn his head, then immediately stepped backward before he could touch me again.

“Security,” I said.

Two hotel guards moved toward us at once.

Daniel stared at me as though he no longer recognized me.

“You hit me.”

“You hit me twice.”

Lorraine shrieked, “After everything we’ve done for you!”

I almost laughed.

Everything they had done for me?

I had paid the ballroom deposit through my events company.

I had covered Daniel’s company payroll twice when his construction business came close to collapsing.

And inside my white bridal clutch was a flash drive containing copies of purchase orders Daniel had asked me to “clean up” for a bank review—documents I had discovered were forged.

Daniel believed he was marrying a softhearted woman with money.

What he seemed to have forgotten was that before building my own company, I had spent seven years working in corporate compliance.

I touched my burning cheek and looked toward the unsigned marriage license waiting beside the officiant.

Lorraine had spent months describing me as “sweet,” “trainable,” and “exactly what Daniel needed.”

I had interpreted those comments as awkward attempts at affection.

Now I understood exactly what she had meant.

They didn’t want a daughter-in-law.

They wanted a woman whose bank account remained available while her opinions stayed silent.

And the worst part was Daniel’s expression.

He wasn’t ashamed of what he had done.

He was furious that I had resisted him in front of everyone.

I looked directly at him.
