ON MY WEDDING DAY, MY MIL ORDERED ME TO PLAY THE SUBSERVIENT MAID FOR 30 MEN.

PART 2

“Congratulations,” I said quietly. “You just canceled your wedding.”

For three seconds, no one moved.

Then Daniel laughed.

There was nothing funny about the situation. It was the kind of laugh that came from someone who still couldn’t believe reality had stopped cooperating with him.

“You’re being dramatic,” he said. “We’ll talk upstairs.”

“There is no upstairs for us.”

Lorraine grabbed my arm.

“You will not humiliate this family over two little slaps.”

I pulled away from her.

“Two little slaps?”

She lowered her voice.

“A wife learns when to stop provoking her husband.”

Whatever sympathy I still had disappeared with that sentence.

I turned toward the hotel manager.

“Please stop alcohol service to the Mercer party. My company is the contracting client. No additional charges are authorized.”

Daniel’s expression immediately changed.

“What are you doing?”

“Stopping my money from financing my own humiliation.”

He followed me into the corridor while whispers spread through the ballroom behind us.

“You can’t walk away,” he snapped. “The bridge funding closes Monday.”

There it was.

Not love.

Funding.

For the previous six months, Daniel had behaved as though my investment in Mercer BuildCo was already guaranteed.

Four hundred thousand dollars was sitting in escrow, dependent on final due diligence and my signature.

Daniel had already told his employees that the money was secured.

He had told his suppliers the same thing.

He had even used the pending investment to convince a regional bank to extend his credit line.

I opened my phone.

“Not anymore.”

For the first time, his confidence faltered.

“You signed a commitment.”

“I signed a conditional term sheet. Your financial representations had to be accurate.”

“They are.”

I held up the flash drive.

“No, Daniel. They’re not.”

The color disappeared from his face.

The forged purchase orders overstated contracted revenue by almost two million dollars.

I had discovered them three days earlier.

Until that evening, I had planned to confront Daniel after our honeymoon because part of me still hoped there might be some explanation.

Now I understood what I was really dealing with.

Lorraine stepped into the corridor.

“He did what he had to do to protect the family.”

Daniel snapped, “Mom, shut up.”

But it was already too late.

My phone had been recording since the first slap.

And every hallway outside the ballroom was covered by hotel security cameras.

From a quiet office near the lobby, I called my attorney and then the bank’s compliance officer.

I didn’t make accusations.

I simply withdrew my investment, revoked authorization for my financial statements to support Daniel’s credit application, and supplied the documents I had originally been asked to verify.

Within twenty minutes, Daniel’s best man—a minority investor in Mercer BuildCo—was demanding explanations.

Within thirty minutes, two suppliers had left the reception.

Within forty-five, police arrived after hotel security reported the assault captured on camera.

That was when Lorraine finally lost control.

She accused me of destroying Daniel’s reputation before demanding that I release the escrow money “for the employees’ sake.”

I asked her one question.

“If his company is healthy, why does it need my money before Monday to survive?”

She couldn’t answer.

Daniel stared at me in disbelief.

“You planned this.”
