“Stop pretending,” my mom snapped while I was gasping for air at the kitchen sink. My uncle said I was only trying to avoid washing dishes. But when the paramedic checked my pulse, his face changed instantly—and his shout for a stretcher turned the whole room into chaos.

“Stop pretending,” my mother snapped while I struggled to breathe over the kitchen sink. My uncle accused me of creating another excuse to avoid the dishes. But the instant the paramedic checked my pulse, her expression changed—and her command for a stretcher sent the entire house into chaos.

“Stop pretending,” my mom scoffed as I gasped for air.

Her words sliced through the kitchen.

I was bent over the sink, gripping the counter with one hand while pressing the other against my chest. Beside me, dirty dishes remained piled beneath streaks of gravy and mashed potatoes.

The edges of my vision darkened until the room narrowed into yellow light, wooden cabinets, and my mother’s irritated face.

“Mom,” I wheezed. “I can’t… breathe.”

My uncle Ray leaned against the refrigerator with a beer in one hand and rolled his eyes.

“She’s doing it again. Every time there’s work to do, she suddenly gets dramatic.”

I tried to respond, but only a weak rasp escaped.

My younger brother, Caleb, stood motionless beside the table.

“Mom, her lips look blue.”

“They do not,” my mother snapped without examining me closely. “Emma, stand up straight. You are eighteen years old, not eight.”

Then my knees gave out.

The glass I had been washing slipped from my hand and shattered inside the sink.

The noise finally brought my stepfather, Daniel, in from the living room. His face changed the moment he saw me collapsed on the tile.

“Call 911,” he said.

Mom spun toward him.

“Daniel, don’t encourage this.”

“Call them,” he repeated, louder.

Caleb grabbed the phone before anyone else moved.

I heard his trembling voice give our address in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, while sweat ran along my temples. My chest felt as though a belt had been wrapped around my ribs and tightened until something inside me began tearing apart.

Mom crouched nearby without touching me.

“Emma, this is enough. You’re scaring your brother.”

I wanted to tell her I was terrified too.

My body would not let me speak.

The paramedics arrived in under seven minutes.

A woman with dark hair tucked beneath a navy cap knelt beside me.

“Emma? Can you hear me?”

I blinked once.

She placed two fingers against my neck.

Her calm expression disappeared.

“Get the stretcher now!” she shouted.

The second paramedic rushed back through the doorway, and the kitchen erupted into panic.

“What?” Mom asked, her voice suddenly small. “What’s wrong with her?”

The paramedic ignored her and attached a monitor to my finger.

“Pulse is thready. Oxygen’s dropping. We need to move.”

Uncle Ray set his beer down so abruptly that it spilled across the table.

My mother reached toward me at last, but the paramedic stepped between us.

“Ma’am, step back.”

As they lifted me onto the stretcher, I saw Caleb silently crying beside the door.

Daniel looked pale, furious, and helpless.

Mom kept calling my name.

By then, I could no longer answer.
