What started as a few itchy red patches became an increasingly worrying experience for one family. Their eight-year-old boy developed raised, swollen marks that appeared on different parts of his body. At first, the symptoms seemed like an ordinary allergic reaction. But as the weeks passed, the itching became more uncomfortable, and the patches continued disappearing and returning.

The condition resembled hives, also called urticaria. These raised, itchy welts can develop when the body releases histamine and other chemicals into the skin. Hives may be associated with infections, medications, allergies, or physical triggers such as heat and pressure. Sometimes, however, the exact cause remains unknown.

After nearly two months, the family noticed another concerning symptom: swelling around the child’s lips and eyelids. This type of swelling, known as angioedema, can sometimes accompany hives. Although it does not always indicate a dangerous reaction, new facial swelling deserves prompt medical assessment, particularly when symptoms are worsening.

Doctors generally recommend evaluating hives that persist or repeatedly return for more than six weeks. Most importantly, swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or trouble swallowing requires immediate emergency care. Parents should avoid assuming that every recurring rash is a simple food allergy. Proper assessment can help identify possible triggers and guide appropriate treatment.
