My Husband Forgot To Hang Up Until I Heard What He Really Thought Of Me

Three months after giving birth to our daughter, I accidentally overheard my husband talking to another woman because he forgot to end our phone call.

I had called to ask when he would be home and had sent him three pictures of our baby smiling. Instead of appreciating them, he complained, “She keeps sending me pictures of that baby like I have nothing better to do.” Then the woman laughed and asked when he was finally leaving me.

My husband answered, “Soon. I can’t stand being around her anymore. I’ll divorce her and marry you.” I stood frozen beside our daughter’s changing table, holding the little girl we’d waited years to have. But instead of confronting him, I quietly ended the call.

Six days later, on our seventh wedding anniversary, I invited both sets of parents to dinner. And when my husband raised his glass, he had no idea that I had prepared a very different anniversary surprise.

The first thing that broke my heart wasn’t hearing another woman’s voice.

It was hearing my husband complain about pictures of our daughter.

Our baby, Sophie, was only three months old.

That afternoon, I’d spent nearly twenty minutes lying on the nursery carpet with my phone held above her face, hoping to capture one of those rare little smiles she made while sleeping.

When it finally happened, her cheeks lifted.

A tiny dimple appeared on the left side of her face.

The same dimple her father had.

I was so excited that I practically jumped off the floor.

I immediately sent Elon the photograph.

*“She smiled in her sleep! Look at her! I think she was dreaming about you.”*

Then I sent two more pictures.

One showed her adorable little feet.

The other showed her resting beside the stuffed elephant his mother had bought her.

Three photographs.

That was all.

I thought her father would be delighted.

Instead, hours later, I overheard him complaining about them to another woman.

**“She sends me pictures all day. Like I don’t have anything more important to do.”**

I looked down at Sophie in my arms.

She was half asleep after her bottle, her tiny hand resting against my shoulder.

And something inside me began to crumble.

My name is Madeline.

Most people call me Maddie.

Elon and I had been married for seven years.

We’d known each other for nine.

And until recently, I believed we had the kind of marriage people hoped to find.

We met at a friend’s backyard barbecue when I was twenty-six.

Elon was trying to grill hot dogs.

He wasn’t particularly good at it.

One caught fire, and he tried blowing it out like a birthday candle.

I laughed and told him that probably wasn’t the best approach.

He grinned.

“It’s a very small fire. Hardly worth worrying about.”

We spent the rest of the evening talking.

He asked for my number before I left.

Then he called the following morning.

On our third date, he drove us to a lake he loved as a child.

He got lost.

The restaurant closed before we arrived.

So we bought hot dogs at a gas station and ate them while sitting on the hood of his car.

“This is a disaster,” he said.

I smiled.

“No. This is perfect.”

Two years later, we were married.

We spent nearly two more years trying to become parents.

There were two heartbreaking pregnancy losses before Sophie.

I still remembered sitting on the bathroom floor with Elon after the second one.

He held me while we both cried.

“I just want us to meet our baby someday,” he whispered.

When Sophie was finally born, he cried so hard that the nurse handed him tissues.

He held her against his chest and sang a country song because it was the only one he remembered all the words to.

I watched them together and thought I had everything I’d ever wanted.

That was only twelve weeks before the phone call.

Somewhere in those twelve weeks, something changed.

Elon stopped answering my messages.

He began coming home later.

He spent more evenings at work.

He seemed irritated whenever I asked for help.

And the little heart emojis he used to send me disappeared.

At first, I told myself it was normal.

Everyone said having a newborn could put enormous pressure on a marriage.

We were both tired.

Our routine had changed.

Maybe we simply needed time.

So I kept trying.

That Monday in September, I’d been awake since 4:10 in the morning.

Sophie had needed feeding.

Then changing.

Then feeding again.

Between those moments, I washed bottles, folded laundry, cleaned the kitchen, and prepared dinner.

I’d made Elon’s favorite chicken with lemon, garlic, and thyme.

He had promised to try to be home by six.

I imagined us sitting down together after Sophie went to sleep.

Maybe he’d give her a bath.

She’d recently discovered that splashing water with her hands was enormously entertaining.

I wanted him to see it.

But six o’clock came and went.

Then six-thirty.

By 6:45, I was bathing Sophie alone.

At 7:05, I wrapped her in her yellow duck towel and called my husband.

He answered on the fourth ring.

“What is it, Madeline?”

His voice sounded impatient.

Not “Hi, sweetheart.”

Not “How’s Sophie?”

Just my full name.

“I was wondering when you’d be home.”

“I’m working.”

“You said you’d try to be back by six.”

“Plans changed.”

Sophie shifted against my shoulder.

I gently rocked her.

“I made your favorite chicken. And I thought maybe you could help with her bath tonight. She’s started splashing.”

Elon sighed.

A long, irritated sigh.

“Maddie, could you stop checking up on me?”

I went quiet.

“I’m not checking up on you.”

“It feels like you are. I’m trying to support this family.”

“I know.”

“Then please let me work.”

The familiar apology escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

“I’m sorry.”

I’d been apologizing constantly lately.

Sorry for asking questions.

Sorry for needing help.

Sorry for being tired.

Sorry when the house was messy.

Sorry when Sophie cried while he was watching television.
