“You’re closer, so you’re watching the kids,” my sister texted right before midnight. “We’re already on the way — Mom has your spare key.”

PART 2

Mia had posted a picture of my door.

**Unbelievable. Jason abandoned his family. He literally locked us out and disappeared.**

The responses arrived immediately.

An uncle wrote that people without children didn’t understand responsibility.

Mom tried to sound neutral while clearly taking Mia’s side.

I didn’t respond.

I put my phone on Do Not Disturb.

Then I spent three days walking around Montreal.

Quiet streets.

Coffee shops.

Museums.

No family demands.

No one telling me what my free time should be used for.

For the first time in years, I felt like I could hear myself think.

When I returned to Chicago, the real fallout began.

There were handwritten letters sitting on my kitchen counter.

Mom had apparently used her emergency key before I changed the locks.

Her letter talked about disappointment.

Responsibility.

Family obligation.

And how she hoped I could eventually learn to balance independence with “showing up.”

The second letter came from Mia’s oldest daughter, Ellie.

Blue crayon.

Back of a coloring page.

**Uncle Jason, Mommy says you don’t love us anymore and that’s why you ran away.**

That one hurt.

Not because I believed it.

Because Mia had pulled her own child into an argument between adults.

I didn’t confront her.

I changed the locks completely.

Then sent Mom one text.

**The spare key no longer works. Please don’t enter my home without permission again.**

She didn’t respond.

Mia did.

Three days later, a package appeared outside my apartment.

Inside were grocery receipts.

School supply bills.

Daycare invoices.

And a note:

**Since you won’t help in person, you can help this way.**

That was when I called her.

“You mailed me bills.”

“You don’t do anything else for this family.”

“Mia, I never agreed to financially support your household.”

“You can afford it.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“You don’t have kids!”

I closed my eyes.

There was that argument again.

My money was somehow available because my life looked different from hers.

“No.”

Her voice sharpened.

“What?”

“I’m not doing this anymore.”

“You don’t care about us.”

“That’s not true.”

“Then what is it?”

I paused.

“I’ve stopped letting you decide what I owe.”

Silence.

Then:

“Wow.”

She ended the call.

I hoped that would finally be enough.

It wasn’t.

A few weeks later, Lana called.

“Have you looked at Facebook?”

“No.”

“You should.”

Mia had posted a photograph of her five children sitting together on the couch.

Underneath she wrote a long caption about how her brother had “abandoned” them because they were inconvenient.

She claimed the children were asking why Uncle Jason didn’t love them anymore.

People I barely knew joined in.

Family friends.

Distant relatives.

Her in-laws.

Some called me cold.

Others said I clearly didn’t understand family because I didn’t have children.

I wanted to respond.

Instead, I blocked Mia.

Then the phone calls began.

Aunts.

Family friends.

Even Dean.

“I understand why you’re mad,” he told me. “But maybe give her one weekend just so things calm down.”

One weekend.

One favor.

One compromise.

The same cycle all over again.
