On our anniversary, my husband raised his glass and said: “Cheers to the biggest mistake of my life.”

PART 2

By nine the following morning, Daniel had changed the locks on our house.

He sent me a photograph of my belongings packed into boxes in the garage.

YOU WANTED DRAMA. ENJOY IT.

At 10:15, I sat in Nina’s office with three years of bank records spread over the conference table.

Daniel had funneled company money through “consulting fees” paid to businesses controlled by Melissa and his father.

A few invoices were legitimate.

Most weren’t.

The total reached $1.7 million.

“He thinks the company is his personal wallet,” Nina said.

“He thinks everything is his.”

That afternoon, Daniel emailed management claiming I was “taking an indefinite personal leave” and should no longer have access to company systems.

He had no authority to make that decision.

I did.

Under our operating agreement, suspending an officer, approving related-party transfers above $25,000, or removing a director required majority approval.

Daniel had repeatedly violated all three provisions.

More importantly, the company’s largest credit line was personally guaranteed by my separate investment trust.

The bank had never trusted Daniel.

It trusted my collateral.

On day two, Daniel called once.

On day three, fourteen times.

Then Melissa texted.

Sign the separation papers Daniel sent and maybe he’ll let you keep the car.

I laughed.

The car was titled in my name.

So was the office building.

Daniel had convinced his family that Prescott Logistics owned its headquarters.

It didn’t.

An LLC I had formed before our marriage owned the property and leased it to the company below market rate.

At noon, I called an emergency shareholder meeting.

Daniel refused to attend.

His attorney appeared over video and labeled the meeting “frivolous.”

Nina placed copies of the operating agreement across the table.

The employee trustee attended.

So did our outside CPA.

I presented the unauthorized transfers, fake invoices, improper bonuses, and a draft email recovered from the company server in which Daniel told Melissa:

“Once Claire signs the divorce papers, we’ll restructure before she realizes what she actually owns.”

The employee trustee turned pale.

Then we voted.

Daniel was suspended as CEO pending a forensic investigation.

His company cards were canceled.

His access to corporate accounts was shut down.

The bank was informed about suspected unauthorized transactions.

I also invoked the lease’s default clause after learning Daniel had used the office address to obtain a separate loan without the property owner’s permission.

By five, Nina looked across at me.

“Once we send these notices, there’s no pretending this marriage can be repaired.”

I remembered Daniel’s raised champagne glass.

“Send them.”

On day four, Daniel called thirty-seven times.

His father called twelve.

Melissa sent nine messages, shifting between insults and panic.

Then the bank froze the disputed credit facility while it reviewed the situation, and a major client postponed renewing its contract.

By the morning of day five, my phone showed 152 missed calls.

And one final message.

Daniel:

please… undo what you did.

I stared at the screen.
