My Daughter Brought Her Fiancé Home to Meet Me Before the Wedding – The Moment She Left the Room, He Said, ‘I Did My Part of the Deal, Now It’s Your Turn’

My daughter spent years avoiding dates and photographs because of the birthmark on her face. So when she brought home the man she planned to marry, I watched him closely.

Dinner went perfectly until Marissa left the room.

Then Graham leaned toward me and mentioned a deal I knew nothing about.

“Mom, those are the fancy plates.”

I looked down at the china in my hands.

“Yes.”

“We’re eating lasagna.”

“I know, dear.”

Marissa stared at me from the kitchen doorway.

“Mari, your mother has been rearranging those plates for 20 minutes,” Henry said from my phone, where I had him on speaker. “Don’t interfere with the process.”

I glared at the screen.

“You were supposed to be here.”

“I know.”

Henry sounded genuinely miserable.

His work trip had run one day longer than expected, which meant the man my daughter intended to marry was coming to dinner for the first time while Henry was four hours away.

“I’ll meet him tomorrow,” he promised. “Properly.”

Marissa checked the clock.

“He’s going to be here in 10 minutes.”

Then she touched one of her earrings.

“Is this too much?”

“No,” I said. “You look beautiful.”

Marissa gave me a small smile.

“Thanks, Mom.”

Then the doorbell rang.

Marissa had been born with a dark reddish birthmark covering much of the left side of her face.

When she was little, she didn’t care.

At four, she once drew herself with a purple crayon covering half her face because, according to her, “purple is prettier than red.”

Then she started school.

Other children taught her to notice.

By seven, she knew which side of class photographs she preferred standing on.

By eleven, she knew how to angle her face whenever someone raised a camera.

At fourteen, she stopped letting me photograph her unless she could approve the picture afterward.

Dating terrified her even more.

Her biological father had disappeared years earlier, leaving me to explain why one man who was supposed to love her had chosen not to stay.

Henry entered our lives later.

He never tried to replace anyone.

He simply kept showing up.

And he never treated Marissa like a stepdaughter.

Eventually, she stopped waiting for him to disappear too.

Still, she never brought boys home.

Not once.

Then six months ago, she called me.

Something in her voice made me sit down.

“Mom… I met somebody.”

Now that somebody was standing on my porch.

I opened the door.

Graham was handsome in an almost annoyingly effortless way.

For one ugly second, a thought slipped into my head.

Please don’t let this be some joke.

I hated myself for thinking it.

Graham held out a bottle of wine.

“Mercy?”

“That’s me.”

“I’m Graham.”

Before I could answer, Marissa appeared behind me.

“Mari,” Graham said, smiling.

His entire face brightened when he saw her.

“Your mom actually let you bring dessert?”

Marissa rolled her eyes.

“I made it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

She smacked his arm.

He laughed.
