My husband set his phone down sharply and said, “From now on, your money is yours, and mine is mine. And please don’t use my money to help your parents anymore.”

PART 3

For the first time that evening, everyone was looking at him instead of me.

Then I revealed what none of them expected.

“Westbridge terminated all three family contracts this morning.”

Kyle exploded.

“You can’t do that!”

“I already did.”

Megan shot to her feet.

“You’re going to ruin us!”

“No,” I replied. “Your billing practices did that.”

Patricia turned desperately toward Daniel.

“Tell her she has no right!”

Daniel looked less certain now.

“Emily… I’m your husband. I have rights to the company too.”

I slowly shook my head.

“No, Daniel. You don’t.”

He froze.

“I started Westbridge four years before our wedding. My grandmother’s trust funded the company’s expansion, and you signed a prenuptial agreement acknowledging that the business was my separate property.”

His mouth opened slightly.

Daniel had forgotten the agreement.

I hadn’t.

“And there’s another envelope.”

I slid it toward him.

He opened it.

Divorce papers.

Patricia gasped.

Daniel stared down at the documents.

“This is crazy.”

“No. Throwing objects because your wife helped her father is crazy.”

His confidence finally began to disappear.

“I was angry.”

“You were revealing.”

He slowly lowered himself into a chair.

For years, I had quietly wondered whether Daniel truly loved me or whether he simply loved the comfortable life my money made possible.

That evening finally gave me the answer.

Within three months, the divorce proceedings were moving forward.

Westbridge recovered a substantial amount of the questionable vendor payments through settlements.

Kyle lost our contract and eventually shut down his company.

Megan’s agency collapsed after two other clients began reviewing their invoices as well.

Daniel’s father sold his new truck and refinanced his warehouse to repay money owed to Westbridge.

Patricia stopped calling me greedy.

Mostly because my attorney instructed her to stop contacting me at all.

Daniel moved into a modest rented condo.

There, he discovered that while his $118,000 salary was certainly respectable, it couldn’t support the luxurious lifestyle he had spent years believing he had created himself.

Six months later, I surprised my parents with plane tickets to Italy for their fortieth wedding anniversary.

My father looked at the itinerary and immediately protested.

“Honey, this is too much.”

I smiled.

“No.”

Morning sunlight streamed through the windows of my new apartment.

“It’s exactly what I want to do with my money.”

For the first time in years, no one was throwing things.

No one was calculating what I owed them.

No one was deciding who deserved my generosity.

Daniel had demanded separate finances.

In the end, he received something far more separate than he expected.

A separate bank account.

A separate home.

A separate future.

And whenever I remembered the sentence that started everything—

“Mine is mine.”

—I couldn’t help smiling.

Because sometimes the most fitting consequence is simply giving someone exactly what they asked for.
