I Spent My Children’s Inheritance on a Luxury Car – Their Reaction Left Me Speechless

PART 3: YOUNG AND RECKLESS AGAIN

Graham leaned forward.

“What do you want from us?”

It was the first time any of them had asked.

“I want honesty,” I replied. “I want you to visit because I am your father, not because you are measuring the furniture. I want you to remember your mother was a person before she became an inheritance.”

Phoebe reached across the table and took my hand.

For a moment, I nearly pulled away.

Then I let her hold it.

“I’m sorry, Dad,” she whispered. “Not because of the will. I’m sorry because you were alone, and I made it worse.”

Graham apologised next.

Julian took longer.

“I don’t know how to repair this,” he finally admitted.

“You begin by not pretending it never happened.”

The car arrived the following Thursday.

It was deep green, with polished wood inside and cream leather seats. When I saw it in the driveway, I laughed for the first time since Margaret died.

Graham, Phoebe and Julian stood beside me.

No one mentioned the cost.

I placed Margaret’s bracelet inside the glove compartment and opened the driver’s door.

Phoebe gave me a small smile.

“Where are you going first?”

I looked toward the road.

“Anywhere your mother and I kept postponing.”

I sat behind the wheel and rested my hands on it.

For a moment, I could almost hear Margaret sitting beside me.

“One day, Harold. Maybe when we’re young and reckless again.”

I was not young.

But when the engine came to life, I understood that reckless did not always mean careless.

Sometimes, it meant spending the money you had worked for instead of allowing others to count it before you were gone.

Sometimes, it meant choosing new memories while still honouring the old ones.

And sometimes, it meant refusing to disappear simply because the person you loved was no longer beside you.

I pulled away from the house with Margaret’s bracelet close by and the open road ahead of me.

For the first time since her death, I was not driving away from my grief.

I was driving toward the life I still had left.
