I was too weak to stand when my husband zipped his suitcase and smiled. “You’ll be fine for a few weeks,” he said before leaving for Europe with his family. Hours later, I discovered

# Part 2

The woman captured in the security footage was Melissa Grant, one of Jason’s coworkers.

The instant I saw her face, I knew exactly who she was. She had come to our Christmas party, delivered flowers after I first became sick, and even smiled at me once while saying how fortunate I was to have such a caring husband.

Detective Bennett explained that a neighbor’s surveillance camera had recorded Melissa waiting inside her car while Jason disconnected the utilities and secured every door. Once he finished, he walked over, handed her a pharmacy bag, and kissed her.

That bag contained my medication.

“Why would she want it?” I asked.

“She didn’t,” the detective replied. “They threw it away at a gas station.”

Investigators believed Jason and Melissa had expected my condition to deteriorate while he was overseas. If I died without my medication, it would likely appear to be nothing more than a tragic consequence of my illness. Not long before the trip, Jason had significantly increased my life insurance coverage and listed himself as the only beneficiary.

I felt my stomach twist.

Police officers arrested Jason at the airport before his flight ever left the ground. His parents and sister were interviewed as well, but investigators uncovered nothing suggesting they had been involved. Jason had told them I would be staying with my sister while they were away.

Melissa was taken into custody at her apartment. During the search, officers recovered copies of my medical records, insurance paperwork, and messages exchanged between the two of them describing what they referred to as “the cleanest solution.”

One message written by Jason read: “Without the pills, she won’t last long enough to cause trouble.”

Seeing those words made it difficult to breathe.

My attorney, Daniel Price, immediately filed for divorce along with an emergency protective order. He also secured a freeze on our joint bank accounts after discovering Jason had already transferred nearly all of our savings into a newly opened account that he shared with Melissa.

The criminal investigation advanced quickly because the evidence left little room for doubt. Jason’s lawyer argued that his client had only intended to frighten me into becoming more self-reliant. Melissa insisted she believed the medication had expired and posed no real danger.

Neither story was consistent with the messages investigators recovered.

After spending two weeks in the hospital, I was discharged and moved in with my sister Rachel. I couldn’t return to our home because it had been sealed as part of the investigation.

Jason tried calling me from jail three separate times.

I ignored the first two calls.

When the third one came, I finally answered.

“Claire,” he said, his voice trembling. “You have to tell them this was a misunderstanding.”

“You locked me inside without medicine or water.”

“I panicked.”

“You increased my life insurance.”

“That was financial planning.”

I closed my eyes.

“Did you think I would die quietly?”

He started crying.

Then he spoke the sentence that erased every remaining doubt.

“Melissa promised we could start over once you were gone.”

The entire conversation was being recorded.

Two months later, prosecutors offered Jason a plea agreement.

He rejected it, convinced that a jury would accept his version of events.

But before the trial could begin, Melissa made a very different decision.

She agreed to cooperate with the prosecution.

And she disclosed that Jason had done something frighteningly similar once before.
