My Daughter Went Missing from Kindergarten with Her Backpack – 15 Years Later, It Arrived at My Door with a Letter That Began, ‘Mom, You Won’t Believe Who Took Me That Day’

She never went anywhere without it.

The classroom assistant confirmed part of Mrs. Hale’s account. She explained that after recess, Mrs. Hale had sent the rest of the children inside because Caroline complained of a stomachache and needed another minute outside. Later that afternoon, everyone realized Caroline had vanished.

The last people known to have seen my daughter were her teacher and the classroom assistant, and both had already been questioned extensively by investigators. After all, how could they have taken Caroline and simply remained at school?

No evidence pointed anywhere.

Behind the page was a photocopied bank statement with Daniel’s name on it.

I read that line three separate times before he asked whether the letter said who had sent it.

I told him I didn’t know.

He reached toward the page.

I jerked it away as though it had burned me.

That was when his expression shifted.

I didn’t see worry, relief, or curiosity.

My husband looked frightened.

I didn’t say another word to him. I simply walked out.

The rental house stood behind a shuttered garden shop at the end of a narrow road. One porch light glowed.

I knocked once.
