PART 1 — THE RULE
The first time I was allowed to bathe my grandson, I discovered why my daughter-in-law had guarded bath time like a secret.
When Luke was born, I wanted to help without becoming an overbearing mother-in-law. My son, Nate, had returned to work early, while his wife, Emily, moved through each exhausting day with the baby in her arms.
I remembered those sleepless months, so I cooked meals, washed bottles, folded baby clothes, and held Luke whenever Emily needed to rest. She accepted nearly every kind of help.
But she would never allow anyone else to bathe him.
The first time I offered, she smiled and said she preferred doing it herself. I assumed it was simply a routine that made her feel secure. Yet as the weeks passed, her refusal became harder to ignore.
Even when she was sick and barely able to stand, she hugged Luke tightly and whispered, “I’m sorry. I just can’t.”
She did not sound controlling. She sounded frightened.
After that, I stopped asking. I told myself she must have a painful memory involving water, and I did not want to cross a boundary.
Months later, Nate and Emily brought Luke to my house for dinner. Emily looked completely drained. After eating, she curled up on the couch and fell asleep.
Nate handed me the baby.
“Mom, could you bathe him tonight? Let her rest.”
I carried Luke upstairs and filled the small tub. He laughed as I undressed him, but when I removed his shirt, I saw a waterproof bandage between his shoulder blades.
Thinking it covered a scratch, I gently peeled it away.
There was no injury underneath.
Only a dark, crescent-shaped birthmark.
My hands began to shake.
Nate had never had a mark like that.
But his older brother, Adrian, had carried the same unmistakable birthmark in the exact same place since childhood.
And Adrian had died ten months earlier.
Footsteps sounded behind me. Emily stood frozen in the doorway. The moment she saw the bandage on the floor, her face turned white.
“You took it off,” she whispered.
I wrapped Luke in a towel.
“Why were you hiding his birthmark?”
Emily closed the door.
“Please put the bandage back.”
Her answer made my blood run cold.
“Who are you hiding it from?”
Before she could answer, Nate entered. His expression changed when he noticed the bandage.
“This mark is identical to Adrian’s,” I said.
Nate went still.
Emily covered her mouth and began to cry.
