My Mother-in-Law Loudly Suggested I ‘Stop Eating for Two’ at My Own Baby Shower – My Mom’s Response Made Her Run Out of Our House

PART 1

After years of treatments, disappointment, and prayers I had nearly stopped believing would be answered, I finally stood in my own backyard carrying the child Lucas and I had longed for.

The baby kicked while my mother pinned small white roses to the wooden arch.

“Mom, come here.”

She hurried across the grass and placed her hand against my stomach. For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the baby pushed back.

My mother laughed and cried at the same time.

“There you are,” she whispered.

She had said those exact words during our first ultrasound. Even now, after three years of appointments and fertility treatments, the pregnancy sometimes felt borrowed from someone else’s life.

Lucas came outside carrying lemonade. When he saw our expressions, he placed the tray down and crouched beside me.

“Did I miss it again?”

“You always miss it.”

He pressed his cheek against my dress.

“Come on, little one. Your father is asking politely.”

The baby remained still.

Lucas smiled and moved my chair into the shade. That was how he loved me—not with dramatic speeches, but by filling my water bottle, carrying snacks for my nausea, and rubbing my swollen ankles.

That morning, surrounded by flowers and tiny seed packets printed with the words **Love makes beautiful things grow**, I felt safe.

Then Brenda arrived.

My mother-in-law crossed the lawn wearing cream heels, a fitted suit, and a large decorative hat. Her gaze moved from the garden to the tables and finally to my dress.

“Midge certainly made an effort.”

My mother smiled.

“We had something worth celebrating.”

Brenda turned toward me.

“That dress is brave.”

I looked down at the floral fabric.

“Brave?”

“Large prints can be dangerous when someone is already carrying extra volume.”

Lucas placed one hand against my back.

“Mom.”

“What? Amy knows I’m honest.”

My mother walked past with a pitcher of lemonade.

“No,” she replied pleasantly. “You always share your opinion.”

Brenda’s smile became stiff.

She had commented on my appearance since Lucas and I became engaged. She criticised my short hair, then disliked it when I grew it longer. She called my wedding gown too plain and once questioned whether I intended to “settle into marriage” because I ordered dessert.

Pregnancy had made her comments worse.

She criticised my meals, warned me not to use the baby as an excuse, and studied my body as though my pregnancy belonged to her.

My doctor had already assured me that everything was healthy.

I wanted one afternoon when Brenda’s voice did not matter.

For a while, I got it.

Guests arrived carrying gifts. Children chased bubbles between the chairs. Nobody asked about my treatments or offered unwanted fertility advice.

They simply celebrated us.

We played games, opened tiny clothes and picture books, and laughed while Lucas failed a diaper-pin contest because he had ignored the instructions.

Then I noticed my mother carrying a cedar box toward the gift table.

“What is that?”

“Later,” she said.

Before I could ask again, Brenda appeared beside the dessert table and stared at the slice of lemon cake in my hand.

“You understand that shower cake still counts.”

Lucas stepped between us and reached for my plate.

Brenda looked satisfied.

Then he took a large bite and returned it to me.

“It’s excellent.”

My cousin laughed into her napkin.

Brenda walked away.

I should have realised she was saving her worst comment for an audience.
