I Finally Met My Son’s Baby – Then a Nurse Whispered, ‘That’s Not the Baby He Left With’

PART 2: THE HIDDEN AGREEMENT

The following afternoon, Daniel and Nora went downstairs to complete some paperwork.

They said they would return in twenty minutes.

After five minutes, I opened the folder where they had stored the hospital documents.

I knew searching through their private papers was wrong. But a nurse had made a disturbing statement, and my son had lied directly to my face.

I needed answers.

At first, I found nothing unusual.

Insurance forms.

Medical instructions.

Consent documents.

Then I discovered a packet marked:

GESTATIONAL SURROGACY AGREEMENT.

I sat down and began reading.

Daniel and Nora’s names appeared throughout the document. A third name was also listed.

Elise.

The agreement identified Daniel and Nora as the intended parents. Elise was the woman who had carried the baby.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

Nora had never been pregnant.

The secrecy, missing photographs, and private appointments had all been connected to the surrogacy.

But another note was attached to the final page.

It explained that the birth carrier had requested private recovery time with the newborn before releasing him to the intended parents.

My hands began shaking.

That was why the nurse had said Daniel had left with one baby and returned with another.

Then the door opened.

Daniel stopped when he saw the documents in my hands.

“Tell me the truth,” I demanded.

His face collapsed.

“We were going to tell you.”

“When?” I asked bitterly. “At his graduation?”

Nora entered behind him and immediately understood what had happened.

Daniel sat across from me.

“We lost three pregnancies,” he said.

The room became silent.

Nora explained that the first pregnancy ended after ten weeks. The second ended after fourteen. The third lasted much longer.

They had already chosen a name.

Her voice broke as she spoke.

“Every time I told people I was pregnant, I eventually had to call them and explain that I wasn’t anymore,” she said. “I couldn’t keep doing it.”

Daniel said they had become terrified of hope, questions, and sympathy.

That was why they had chosen surrogacy and kept everything secret.

I understood their pain, but one question remained.

“Why did the nurse say that wasn’t the baby you left with?”

Daniel and Nora exchanged a frightened look.

Then Nora whispered, “Because the first baby you held wasn’t ours.”

I stared at her.

Daniel explained that the baby I had held belonged to another family in the next room.

Shortly before I arrived, that baby’s mother had suffered a serious medical emergency. The father rushed away with her, and the grandmother fainted in the hallway.

A nurse had temporarily asked Daniel to hold their newborn while the staff handled the crisis.

Then I entered the room.

I had been crying and smiling. Daniel had not slept in two days, and instead of stopping me, he had allowed me to believe the child was my grandson.

“Where was your real baby?” I asked.

“With Elise,” Nora replied.

Elise had carried their son for nine months. But three weeks before the delivery, her husband had died in a car accident.

She still honored the agreement.

However, after giving birth, overwhelmed by grief, she begged Daniel and Nora for one final day with the baby.

“She kept saying she knew he wasn’t hers,” Nora explained. “She only wanted one day to say goodbye.”

Legally, Daniel and Nora could probably have refused.

Instead, they agreed.

Elise was not trying to keep the child. She was grieving the loss of her husband while preparing to surrender the baby she had carried.

Daniel and Nora believed giving her one day was the compassionate choice.
