My daughter-in-law pushed a stack of greasy plates into my hands and said, “Could you finish these? My mother prefers her wine chilled.”

Chapter 2

The missing envelope showed my generosity had become an expectation

My phone buzzed all the way home.

David called twice, Rachel three times, and I ignored every call because adrenaline was still running through me and I had nothing useful to say.

At home, I removed my shoes, lit a lavender candle, and made chamomile tea.

For the first Sunday in months, I wasn’t under someone else’s kitchen light scraping cheese from a casserole dish while laughter came from another room.

Shortly before nine the next morning, a car door slammed outside.

I looked through the window and saw David rushing up my walkway.

The first Monday of every month.

Of course.

I opened the door before he knocked.

“Mom, what happened last night?”

“I came home.”

He frowned. “We turned around and you were just gone. Rachel was really upset.”

I waited.

“She had to do all the dishes herself.”

I nearly laughed but kept my face neutral.

“That sounds manageable.”

David followed me into the kitchen.

His eyes drifted toward the small console table near the hallway, where I normally left a white envelope containing five crisp hundred-dollar bills.

It was empty.

He looked at me.

“I can’t stay. I have a meeting.”

“I’ll make you coffee to go.”

I poured it into his travel mug.

He didn’t drink.

“Mom, did you forget what day it is?”

“No.”

His eyes returned to the table.

“Where’s the envelope?”

“There isn’t one this month.”

He stared.

“I’ve reworked my budget.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means I’m no longer contributing $500 every month toward groceries.”

David opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

“But we’ve always—”

“You have two full-time incomes.”

“Mom, that’s part of our budget.”

There it was.

My gift had become a line item.

“I understand.”

“You can’t just stop.”

I looked at my grown son holding coffee I’d made in the house I paid for.

“Actually, David, I can.”

He left ten minutes later, stunned and unusually quiet.

Watching his car disappear, I already knew Rachel would see this not as a boundary, but a declaration of war.

She arrived the next morning with both children.

From her expression, she had brought them as ammunition.
