After spending 52 hours in Miami buying my mistress an $11.8 million penthouse, treating her to a $32,000 private yacht dinner, and staying another night because she threatened to leave me, I returned home at 6:03 a.m. to find my pregnant wife missing.

“Your wife didn’t simply walk away, Mr. Knox,” the attorney told me. “She made arrangements to ensure your fortune could never purchase her forgiveness.”

I stood motionless in our empty nursery.

Two cribs were missing.

On the table lay the hospital bracelets belonging to my newborn twins, Ethan and Eva.

They had arrived just two minutes apart.

And I’d been nearly nine hundred miles away, enjoying a yacht party in Miami with my mistress.

“Claire filed for divorce yesterday afternoon,” the attorney continued. “She’s requesting primary custody.”

My stomach tightened.

“She’d just given birth.”

“Yes. And she’d already prepared the paperwork weeks earlier.”

Then he listed the evidence.

Twenty-eight unanswered calls.

Messages informing me that Claire had gone into labor.

Flight arrangements that would’ve allowed me to return immediately.

Photographs showing me celebrating with Sienna while my wife was in the hospital.

I remembered watching my phone light up.

HOSPITAL CALLING.

And deliberately turning it facedown.

After the call ended, I discovered an envelope bearing my full name.

Inside were photographs of Claire holding our twins.

The final picture showed an empty chair beside her hospital bed.

On the back, she’d written:

This was supposed to be yours.

Her letter was even more painful.

Eva had experienced serious breathing complications after birth.

Claire had signed the emergency treatment papers alone.

She’d repeatedly told the medical staff I was coming.

But eventually, she’d stopped making excuses for me.

Adrian, you always believed money could solve everything.

Missed birthdays became expensive gifts. Arguments became vacations. Loneliness became another house.

But how much would you have paid to hear Ethan’s first cry?

How much was the moment Eva first held my finger worth?

Our children survived. You can still become their father.

But you’ll never again be the husband I trusted.

I tried calling her.

Her number was disconnected.

She and the babies had disappeared.

For the first time in decades, my wealth couldn’t give me the one thing I desperately wanted.

Then my assistant, Marcus Hale, entered with a disturbing discovery.

Sienna had secretly been meeting Daniel Voss, a senior executive at Knox Dynamics.

Someone had accessed confidential company systems using authentication devices stored in my private office.

Sensitive information connected to Helix Vector, a technology operation valued at approximately $24 billion, had been compromised.

I demanded an investigation.

But Marcus showed me something even more troubling.

A photograph of Sienna embracing Nathan Mercer outside the hospital.

Nathan was Claire’s older brother.

Seven years earlier, I’d testified in a financial fraud case that sent him to prison.

Now he appeared connected to the woman who’d helped destroy my marriage.

When I confronted Sienna, she seemed remarkably calm.

“You think Daniel Voss is controlling everything?” she asked.

“Then who is?”

She laughed softly.

“Oh, Adrian. You really have no idea.”

And disconnected.

Part 3 — The son I’d forgotten

The investigation soon uncovered a mysterious DNA report suggesting I wasn’t Ethan’s biological father.

But the document carried an impossible date.

It had supposedly been completed six weeks before Ethan’s birth.

Then a video arrived.

It showed Sienna entering my private office.

A second woman followed.

Claire.

My wife appeared to be helping Sienna access my safe.

On the desk sat a folder marked:

PROJECT SECOND FATHER.

Moments later, Claire called.

“The report doesn’t necessarily belong to our Ethan,” she explained.

Then she asked whether I remembered something from thirteen years earlier.

A struggling technology startup.

An unauthorized financial transfer.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

Suddenly, memories I’d spent years avoiding returned.

Before Claire and I married, I’d been involved with Emily Hart, a brilliant engineer who helped build the earliest version of Knox Dynamics.

She became pregnant while our company was struggling financially.

Our son, Lucas, was born prematurely.

Emily passed away following serious medical complications.

Overwhelmed by guilt and ambition, I’d allowed her parents to raise Lucas.

I’d promised myself the arrangement would be temporary.

But temporary became thirteen years.

I sent money.

I never visited.

And I let my son grow up without knowing me.
