Days after my major spinal surgery, Mom called and whispered, “I hope you understand why we couldn’t be there.”

With tears in my eyes, I replied, “I understand perfectly. My sister’s party mattered more to you!”

She froze and couldn’t say another word.

The monitor beside my hospital bed beeped with a steady, rhythmic cruelty that seemed to mirror the emptiness in my chest.

Three days earlier, steel rods and titanium screws had been fused into my lumbar spine to keep me from losing the use of my legs. The surgery had lasted six exhausting hours, and when I finally woke in intensive care, terrified and shivering from post-operative shock, my phone remained completely silent.

Maybe the interstate had been blocked.

“Hi, sweetie,” my mother’s voice chirped through the speaker, sounding far too cheerful, without the exhaustion or fear I expected from a parent whose child had just undergone major spinal reconstruction. “I just wanted to call and check in. I hope you understand why we couldn’t be there with you at the hospital.”

The silence in the room suddenly felt deafening.

My throat tightened as an old, familiar wound opened again.
