PART 3
“You can’t do this to us! We’re your mother and sister! If you press charges, you’ll tear this family apart!”
“The family was torn apart the moment you decided my life and my property were worth less than a weekend party,” I said coldly.
Before Chloe could scream anything else, the two men outside stepped into the room and showed their federal badges.
“Mrs. Reynolds and Miss Chloe Reynolds?” the lead investigator asked smoothly, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. “I am Special Agent Miller. You need to come with us to answer a few questions regarding wire fraud, identity theft, and interstate property forgery.”
My mother let out a horrified gasp.
Chloe burst into frantic tears, screaming my name as the agents escorted them both out of the room.
Their desperate excuses echoed down the hospital corridor until they finally disappeared into silence.
The room became peaceful again, except for the steady beep of the heart monitor.
Aunt Sarah stepped back inside carrying a fresh vase of wildflowers.
She placed them on the windowsill and gently squeezed my hand.
“You did the right thing, honey,” she whispered softly.
I leaned back against the pillows and closed my eyes as a deep wave of relief finally moved through me.
The titanium rods in my spine still ached.
The road to physical recovery would be long and difficult.
But for the first time in my life, the crushing weight of always being second best was gone.
My mother and Chloe had believed I would stay quiet because I always had.
They believed I would let them explain, excuse, and justify what they had done because that was what I had done for twenty-four years.
Not anymore.
I might not have been able to stand on my own two feet yet.
But I had finally started standing up for myself.
And no one would ever make me crawl again.
