“This is my home,” he snapped.

“No,” I said calmly.

Adrian paced across the room.

“One mistake?”

I looked at him.

“You ignored seven calls from your pregnant wife. You told your assistant not to interrupt you. You used company money for personal expenses. You approved questionable payments.”

I paused.

“Which mistake would you like me to overlook first?”

His expression hardened.

“I didn’t know you were in danger.”

“You chose not to find out.”

That affected him more than shouting ever could have.

Then he tried the argument I expected.

“If you remove me, the company collapses. Investors trust me.”

My lawyer turned on the television.

Financial news was already reporting Vale Meridian’s official statement.

The CEO had been suspended.

An interim chief had been appointed.

And the controlling shareholder had publicly reaffirmed support for the company.

The stock dipped briefly after the announcement.

Then it began recovering.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“You planned this.”

“I prepared for it,” I said.

“There’s a difference.”

Three weeks later, the forensic audit uncovered far more than Celeste’s questionable retainers.

Adrian had buried travel reimbursements, personal renovations, and luxury purchases inside acquisition expenses.

The board eventually terminated him for cause.

The company began proceedings to recover improperly spent funds.

Authorities later pursued fraud-related cases connected to Celeste and corporate-record violations involving Adrian.

During the divorce, Adrian claimed I had manipulated the board because I wanted revenge.

The judge cared about documents.

Not drama.

My inherited shares remained mine.

The penthouse remained inside the trust.

Marital assets were divided according to the prenuptial agreement.

Adrian left with enough to rebuild his life, but not enough to maintain the extravagant world he had supported with money that was never truly his.

He called me once after the settlement.

“I lost everything because of you.”

I stood quietly beside the white magnolia I had planted in Daniel’s memory.

“No,” I said.

“You lost what you had because you believed I would keep paying for your choices.”

Then I ended the call.

Eight months later, I returned to Vale Meridian as chairwoman.

We strengthened audit controls.

We appointed a permanent CEO.

I also funded a bereavement support program for parents experiencing pregnancy loss, because grief should never have to ask permission to exist.

On what would have been Daniel’s first birthday, I planted another white magnolia beside my new home.
