On the fifth day of our marriage, at my first dinner with his family, I reached for the food. My SIL blocked me and snapped, “You’re new here. Learn the rules.”

PART 2

The next morning, Daniel demanded another apology.

We stood in the kitchen of the townhouse we had supposedly bought together, though I had contributed seventy percent of the down payment.

“You embarrassed me,” he said.

I slowly stirred my coffee.

“Your sister slapped me.”

“She was correcting you.”

I stared at him.

“Correcting me?”

Daniel sighed as if explaining something to a difficult child. “You don’t understand their traditions.”

“No, Daniel. I understand them perfectly.”

His jaw tightened.

Then he made his mistake.

“My mother helped us get where we are. You need to show respect. Especially right now.”

“Why especially right now?”

He froze.

“Nothing.”

He left for work ten minutes later.

I opened my laptop.

Hawthorne Interiors had been losing money for fourteen months.

That alone wasn’t unusual.

The problem was where the remaining money had gone.

Consulting fees paid to a company owned by Vanessa.

Luxury vehicle leases listed as client transportation.

Margaret’s vacations disguised as supplier-development trips.

And one large transfer made six days before my wedding.

$480,000.

Recipient: DLR Strategic Consulting.

Owner: Daniel Robert Lawson.

My husband.

I sat perfectly still.

So that was why he had rushed the marriage.

Three months earlier, I had casually mentioned that Ashford Capital sometimes restructured distressed family companies instead of forcing liquidation.

Daniel had remembered.

He had not married an “office auditor.”

He had married what he thought was a rescue package.

By noon, I had transferred the internal review to an independent team and disclosed my relationship to Hawthorne’s owners.

Then I called our general counsel.

“Freeze all restructuring discussions,” I said. “Potential related-party fraud.”

The following night, Margaret summoned us to dinner again.

This time, I went willingly.

Vanessa opened the door wearing a victorious smile.

“I hope you’ve had time to think about your behavior.”

“I have.”

“Good.”

At dinner, Margaret announced that I would be expected to use my “little finance job” to help secure Hawthorne’s refinancing.

Daniel squeezed my knee beneath the table.

A warning.

Margaret continued, “Family helps family.”

Vanessa smirked. “Consider it your apology.”

I put down my fork.

“What exactly do you want?”

Daniel finally answered.

“Ashford has enough influence to delay the lenders. You can recommend an extension.”

There it was.

Clear.

Direct.

Recorded by the phone in my handbag.

I smiled.

“And if I refuse?”

Margaret’s expression turned cold.

“Then perhaps Daniel should reconsider whether you belong in this family.”

Vanessa laughed.

Daniel said nothing.

I looked at him. “Is that what you want?”

He hesitated.

Then his mother glanced at him.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

I nodded.

Vanessa leaned toward me.

“Now you understand the rules.”

My phone buzzed.

A message from general counsel.

FORENSIC TEAM CONFIRMED DIVERTED FUNDS. LENDER COUNSEL NOTIFIED. EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING TOMORROW.

I looked at Vanessa.

“No,” I said.

“I think tomorrow, you will.”
