I Was Lifting Our Heavy Mattress to Search for an Earring I Had Dropped Behind the Bedframe

PART 3

The address on Brenda’s letters was three hours away.

I drove the entire distance alone

When I finally reached the small house, I sat in my car for several minutes gathering the courage to knock.

A woman opened the door.

She looked tired.

Not dramatically ill.

Just deeply exhausted in a way that made Ethan’s explanation suddenly feel very real.

“Can I help you?”

“I’m Clarissa.”

Her eyes widened.

“Clarissa?”

“Yes.”

“As in Ethan’s wife?”

I nodded.

A smile immediately appeared on her face.

“He finally told you about us.”

The words hurt.

Because he hadn’t.

Before I could answer, a small boy appeared behind her legs.

He held a crayon drawing in one hand.

Milo.

The boy from the photograph.

“Uncle Ethan told me about you,” he said.

I looked at Brenda.

She seemed surprised by his interruption.

Milo held up his picture.

There were four stick figures.

“That’s Mom,” he explained.

He pointed.

“That’s me.”

Another figure.

“That’s Uncle Ethan.”

Then he pointed toward an unfinished fourth person.

“I didn’t know what you looked like yet.”

Something inside me broke open.

Not anger.

Something softer.

Brenda stepped aside.

“Would you like to come in?”

I entered.

The house was modest and carefully kept.

There were medicine bottles on the kitchen counter.

Hospital paperwork near a stack of unopened mail.

Milo’s drawings covered the refrigerator.

Whatever I had imagined on the drive there disappeared.

There was no glamorous secret life.

No second household.

No hidden affair.

There was simply a frightened mother, a six-year-old boy, and my husband trying badly to help them without letting me in.

“Excuse me,” I said.

“I need to make a call.”

I stepped into the kitchen and dialed Ethan.

He answered immediately.

“Clarissa?”

“I’m at Brenda’s.”

Silence.

Then:

“What?”

“Come here.”

“Clarissa—”

“Just come.”

He arrived several hours later looking pale and terrified.

The three of us sat around Brenda’s small dining table.

Tea went cold between us.

Milo played in the next room.

Ethan kept looking at me as though he expected me to leave at any moment.

I finally spoke.

“I’m hurt.”

His eyes dropped.

“I know.”

“I’m furious that you hid this from me.”

“I know.”

“I’m especially angry that you decided I couldn’t be trusted with the truth.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“I was afraid.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

I took a breath.

“But I’m not leaving you.”

Ethan stared at me as though he hadn’t understood.

“What?”

“I’m not leaving.”

His shoulders dropped.

Brenda quietly looked away, giving us privacy even though we were sitting at her table.

I continued.

“But this can never happen again.”

Ethan nodded quickly.

“You don’t get to decide what truths I can handle.”

“I understand.”

“If we’re married, then your family problems are my family problems too.”

“I know.”

“And if you were seriously considering becoming Milo’s guardian, then that was something we should have discussed together.”

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at the man I had loved for seven years.

He was still Ethan.

The man who brought coffee upstairs every Sunday.

The man who remembered every important date.

The man who stuck ridiculous notes to mirrors.

But now I saw another part of him.

A frightened little boy who had grown up terrified of becoming his father.

“You are not him,” I said.

Ethan looked confused.

“Your father.”

His face changed.

“You are not your father.”

His eyes filled again.

“But if you keep hiding things because you’re afraid of becoming him, you’re going to repeat his mistakes anyway.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“I’m not your mother either.”

“I know.”

“And I’m not going anywhere just because your family is complicated.”

Brenda reached across the table and gently squeezed my hand.

Then Milo wandered into the room.

Without asking permission, he climbed directly into my lap.

Everyone froze.

Milo apparently saw no problem with this arrangement.

He leaned against me and continued coloring.

I looked down at him.

Then at Ethan.

For the first time since discovering the package beneath our bed, I smiled.

Months passed.

Brenda’s treatment began working better than expected.

Ethan no longer made secret weekend trips.

We drove together.

Sometimes I stayed with Brenda while Ethan took Milo to the park.

Sometimes Milo came home with us.

Eventually, our guest room became his weekend bedroom.

There were dinosaur sheets.

Crayon drawings taped to the wall.

A small plastic box filled with toys.

Ethan and I still had difficult conversations.

Trust didn’t repair itself overnight.

He had hidden something enormous from me, and love didn’t magically erase that.

But at least there were no more sealed packages beneath mattresses.

No fake work trips.

No letters hidden behind my back.

One Sunday morning, I walked into the bathroom and noticed a new note stuck to the mirror.

Ethan’s handwriting.

I peeled it off.

“Thank you for choosing us.”

I stood there reading it for several seconds.

Then I heard Milo laughing somewhere down the hallway.

I smiled.

Seven years earlier, I thought marriage meant knowing everything about another person.

Now I understood something different.

Sometimes the person you love is carrying a part of their past they are terrified to show you.

The secret itself doesn’t always destroy a marriage.

Sometimes what matters most is what happens after the truth finally comes out.

And Ethan finally learned that he never had to protect me from his family.

Because once he let me choose for myself…

I chose all of them.
