My sister ignored 127 calls as her daughter lay dy:ing in the hospital—then arrived at Sofia’s funeral sunburned beside my husband, both pulling luggage from the same secret getaway.

PART 2

That afternoon, while Vanessa and Daniel accepted condolences, an independent audit team entered company headquarters.

Daniel’s access was frozen.

Vanessa’s charity cards were cancelled.

The board received a sealed evidence package containing bank records, invoices, reservation details, and server logs.

Those logs also showed that Daniel had attempted to delete vendor files from his phone while standing beside Sofia’s coffin.

By evening, both of their phones began ringing constantly.

Daniel found me beside a framed photograph of Sofia.

In the picture, she was smiling with one front tooth missing and her hair tied in purple ribbons.

“You’re destroying everything,” he said.

I looked at Sofia’s fearless grin.

“No. I’m preventing you from destroying anything else.”

He grabbed my arm.

A voice behind him spoke firmly.

“Take your hand off her.”

Daniel turned.

My attorney stood there with two company board members and a detective from the financial crimes unit.

Vanessa stared at the detective’s badge.

For the first time that day, her grief appeared genuine.

The confrontation took place before the last funeral guest had left.

I approached the microphone beneath Sofia’s photograph.

Vanessa rushed toward me, but the detective stepped into her path.

“This memorial fund was created to help children receive medical treatment their families cannot afford,” I began. “Today, I must explain why its two directors are being removed.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Emma, stop.”

I pressed play.

His recorded voice came through the speakers.

**“When Sofia’s next fundraiser clears, move twenty thousand into the vendor account. Emma never checks anything unless we tell her to.”**

Then Vanessa’s laughter followed.

**“She’ll repair it. She always repairs everything.”**

I displayed the false invoices, resort expenses, flight charges, and a photograph the hotel had posted online two days earlier.

It showed Daniel and Vanessa aboard a catamaran, raising glasses of champagne while my calls went unanswered.

Vanessa tore off her sunglasses.

“You vindictive woman! My daughter is dead!”

“Yes,” I replied, my voice finally breaking. “And while she was dying, you were spending money donated to help sick children.”

She struck me across the face.

Before she could do it again, the detective caught her wrist.

Daniel quickly changed tactics.

He stepped closer, softened his expression, and spoke as though we were still alone in our home.

“Emma, we can survive this. I love you.”

I looked at the man I had married twelve years earlier.

“My lawyer filed for divorce at nine o’clock this morning.”

His expression changed.

“You can’t take the house.”

“It belonged to me before our marriage.”

“What about the company?”

“Your employment was terminated by unanimous board vote twenty minutes ago.”

Vanessa screamed that the charity belonged to her.

One of the board members handed her an official removal notice.

Then the detective informed both of them that they were being investigated for fraud, embezzlement, conspiracy, and destruction of financial records.

They were escorted past Sofia’s white coffin.

Neither of them looked back at her.

But their downfall did not end inside that church.

The audit eventually uncovered seventy-three fraudulent transactions.

Daniel accepted a plea agreement that included four years in prison, repayment of the stolen funds, and a permanent ban from managing charitable money.

Vanessa refused to accept responsibility.

She went to trial, blamed Daniel, the accountants, the board, and eventually me.

The evidence told a different story.

She was convicted and received a six-year sentence.

The scandal cost them their careers, their friends, and every hidden dollar they had treated as their own.

The court ordered the sale of their investment property to repay Northbridge Relief.

But legal consequences could not return what they had taken from Sofia.

During the investigation, I repeatedly asked myself whether I had failed her too.

I had known Vanessa was selfish.

I had known Daniel cared far too much about money and appearances.

Yet I kept covering their mistakes because I believed protecting the family was the same as loving it.

Sofia had understood more than I realised.

Several weeks after the funeral, I found a drawing inside the bag she had carried to the hospital.

It showed three figures holding hands.

One was labelled **Sofia**.

One was labelled **Aunt Emma**.

The third was Grace, the therapy dog from the children’s cardiac ward.

Vanessa was not in the picture.

Daniel was not there either.

On the back, Sofia had written:

**Aunt Emma always comes.**

I sat on the floor and cried until I could no longer breathe properly.

She had known who would answer.

She had simply continued hoping her mother might become someone different.
